The God of the Impossible: Embracing Divine Sovereignty
In a world where limitations often define our reality, there's a profound truth that can transform our perspective: we serve the God of the impossible. This isn't just a catchy phrase, but a fundamental aspect of who God is and how He operates in our lives.
The concept of God's sovereignty is central to understanding His nature. It means that there is no authority higher than God, and all other authorities are established by Him. This includes earthly governments, spiritual realms, and natural forces. As Romans 13:1-2 states, "Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God."
This sovereignty extends to every aspect of creation. God has authority over man and all of nature. Throughout history, we've seen examples of this divine power at work:
- God raised one nation to break another (Habakkuk 1:5-11)
- He caused a big fish to swallow Jonah and spit him out where God wanted him to be
- He sent hornets to drive out Israel's enemies (Joshua 24:12)
- He made the sun stand still to give Joshua more time to win a battle
These instances remind us that God doesn't need permission from anyone to act. He does what He thinks is necessary, when He deems it appropriate. As Isaiah 46:10 declares, "My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure."
Understanding God's sovereignty helps us believe in miracles. When we recognize that God created everything and has supreme authority, it becomes easier to trust in His ability to do the seemingly impossible in our lives. Whether it's healing from a terminal illness, restoration of a broken relationship, or provision in times of lack, nothing is too difficult for our God.
The story of Jesus' birth beautifully illustrates this truth. When Mary questioned how she could conceive without knowing a man, the angel responded, "For with God nothing will be impossible" (Luke 1:37). This same God who placed the Son of God in a virgin's womb and enabled an elderly Sarah to bear a child is the God we serve today.
It's crucial to remember that while God is all-powerful, He's also deeply personal. He cares about the details of our lives and desires to move on our behalf. However, we must be willing to surrender to His timing and methods. Sometimes, we might think we know how God will work, but He surprises us. Our role is to remain open and obedient, ready to move when He says move and wait when He says wait.
The power of God is intrinsically tied to the name of Jesus. After His resurrection, Jesus declared, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18). This same authority is available to believers, but it comes with a caveat. It's not about using the name of Jesus as a magic formula, but about truly submitting to His lordship in our lives.
A poignant illustration helps drive this point home: Imagine a homeless man receiving a check for $25,000 from a wealthy businessman. The check's value doesn't depend on the appearance or worthiness of the homeless man, but on the signature of the one who wrote it. Similarly, our access to God's power doesn't depend on our own merit, but on the "signature" of Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
Throughout Scripture and history, we see examples of God doing the impossible:
- Moses parting the Red Sea
- David defeating Goliath
- The Hebrew boys surviving the fiery furnace
- Jesus feeding the 5,000, healing the sick, and raising the dead
Perhaps the greatest demonstration of God's power over the impossible was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This event not only proved His divinity but also secured our hope for eternal life and the promise of His power working in us.
So, what does this mean for us today? It means that whatever challenges we face, whatever mountains loom before us, we serve a God who specializes in the impossible. No situation is too dire, no problem too complex for Him to solve.
However, embracing this truth requires more than just mental assent. It demands a life fully surrendered to God's sovereignty. It's easy to play at being a Christian, to look the part on Sunday mornings. But God sees beyond our outward appearances to the reality of our hearts. He knows whether we're truly submitted to His will or just going through the motions.
The invitation is clear: stop limiting God by your own understanding or expectations. Allow Him to be who He is – the sovereign Lord of all creation. When we do this, we position ourselves to experience His power in unprecedented ways.
Remember, the God who began His redemptive work in an empty womb and sealed it with an empty tomb is the same God who wants to work in your life today. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, and He desires to be present in every moment in between.
As you face your own "impossible" situations, take heart. The God of the universe, the One who holds all authority, is on your side. He is not bound by natural laws or human limitations. He is ready and willing to move mountains on your behalf.
Will you trust Him? Will you surrender fully to His sovereignty? The God of the impossible is waiting to demonstrate His power in your life. All He asks is that you believe and submit to His lordship. When you do, you'll discover that with God, nothing is impossible.
