Day 3: The Three-Legged Stool of Spirit Walking
Reading: Romans 8:5-14, John 16:7-15, 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Devotional:
A three-legged stool collapses when any leg is removed. Similarly, walking in the Spirit requires three foundational legs: agreement with Scripture, surrender of will, and awareness of His presence.
The Holy Spirit will never contradict the Word He inspired. This truth serves as our guardrail for discerning His voice from our own thoughts or enemy deception. Jesus promised the Spirit would guide us into all truth, not away from it. When we sense a prompting, we must measure it against Scripture. Does this align with God's character? Does it echo His written Word? A Spirit-led life is always a Scripture-saturated life. The Spirit doesn't give us new revelation that contradicts biblical truth; He illuminates and applies timeless truth to our present circumstances. Today, test your impressions against God's Word. Let Scripture be the foundation upon which the Spirit builds His daily guidance. When the Word and the Spirit agree, you can move forward with confidence in your step-by-step journey. He won't lead you toward unforgiveness, sexual immorality, or gossip while Scripture clearly forbids these. To be Spirit-led means to be Word-fed. You need vitamin B-I-B-L-E in your spiritual diet. Your spiritual diet determines your spiritual direction.
Surrendering your will sounds like Jesus in Gethsemane: "Not my will, but Yours." It means saying "yes" to God before knowing what He'll ask. It requires releasing control over your Netflix queue, dating life, friendships, and career ambitions. Daily walking sounds like: "Holy Spirit, my answer is yes
Finally, practice His presence continually. The Holy Spirit isn't your Sunday guest; He's your permanent resident. Live like He's in the room—because He is.
Reflection:
Which leg of your stool needs strengthening?
Where are you resisting God's leadership?
Which leg of your stool is weakest—Word, surrender, or awareness?
Application:
Create a card with this prayer: "Holy Spirit, good morning. Thank you for another day. I present myself to you. Lead my day step-by-step."
