Day 3: Laying Down the Weight
Reading: Matthew 11:25-30 and Hebrews 12:1-3
Devotional:

Jesus does not call you to carry what He died to free you from. His invitation in Matthew 11 is not directed at people who have abandoned faith,  it is directed at people who love God but are exhausted from carrying burdens He never assigned to them. Some of what is weighing you down is not obedience, it is people-pleasing, unresolved shame, old wounds rehearsed daily, and responsibilities that belong to God alone. Freedom is not living without a yoke. Freedom is being yoked to the right Master. Jesus offers rest not as absence of movement but as the peace that comes from walking in step with Him. Jesus extends one of the most sensitive invitations in all of Scripture in Matthew 11:28-30, calling those who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. But notice He does not simply remove the burden and leave you unattached. He offers an exchange: lay down your weight and take up His yoke. A yoke speaks of connection, direction, and partnership. Freedom is not living without a yoke; freedom is being yoked to the right Master. Many believers are exhausted not because the path is impossible but because they are carrying things Jesus never assigned to them. Guilt He already forgave. Shame He already removed. Control that was never theirs to hold. The wrong weight makes the right path feel impossible. You may be blaming the journey when the real problem is what you are carrying. Surrender is not weakness. It is the beginning of walking lightly.
Reflection Questions:
What burdens are you currently carrying that Jesus never asked you to pick up?
Is there a relationship, responsibility, or habit that is making obedience feel heavier than it should?
What would it feel like to genuinely surrender one of those weights to Jesus today?
Practical Application:
Take a piece of paper and write down every burden currently pressing on your spirit. One by one, speak this prayer over each one: "Lord, I give You my __________, and I receive Your __________." Be specific. Then physically set the paper aside as an act of surrender and trust. :
Make a written list of the weights you have been carrying. Next to each one, honestly ask: "Did Jesus give me this, or did I pick it up somewhere else?" Then pray specifically over each item, surrendering it to God by name. Exchange the weight for His yoke through deliberate, spoken surrender.
