Still Standing

This powerful message confronts a reality we all face: what happens when we're doing everything right spiritually, yet life still hits us hard? Drawing from 1 Peter 4:12-13 and James 1:2-4, we're reminded that trials aren't proof we've lost the fight—they're proof we're in it. The sermon challenges us to reframe our understanding of opposition, using the profound illustration of salmon swimming upstream. While dead fish float effortlessly downstream, living salmon fight against the current to reach their destination. When we face resistance in our spiritual walk, it's often a sign we're moving in God's direction, not the world's. The message introduces a transformative concept: freedom isn't the absence of battles, but the presence of Jesus and His joy in the middle of them. We're called to develop what the sermon describes as 'holy stubbornness'—a persistence that refuses to quit on God even when everything screams for us to give up. The practical applications are deeply encouraging: when we fall, we shouldn't fall backward into condemnation but forward into grace. Like a marathon runner who hits 'the wall' at 20 miles, we're taught not to stop but to adjust our pace and keep moving. This message beautifully connects persistence with joy, showing us that joy isn't about faking happiness but maintaining deep confidence that God is working, God is with us, and God will finish what He started.
